Libya Air Strikes and Land Military Offensive Retakes Brega

Armed forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi have retaken the eastern city of Brega with air strikes less than two miles from a Libyan oil terminal. Rebels fighting in the east fear this is the start of a broader offensive against citizens in towns that have toppled Gadhafi’s rule.

Marsa Brega also known as Marsa el-Brega or Marsā al-Burayqah, is situated in Libya on the Gulf of Sirte, the most southerly point of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in the former Ajdabiya District, which in 2007 was merged into the Al Wahat District.

The BBC is reporting that Gaddafi’s forces failed to re-capture the city on March 2, but were repelled by the opposition.

The escalating violence continues to threaten the OPEC nation’s oil infrastructure.
