At Least 120 Dead As Syrian Security Forces Attempt to Suppress Protesters

Syrian security forces shot at tens of thousands of people joining funeral processions Saturday after the bloodiest day of the monthlong uprising against President Bashar Assad. The death toll from two days of violence has risen to at least 120. Two lawmakers and a local religious leader have resigned in disgust over the killings.

Syria’s National Organization for Human Rights, said 112 people were killed Friday and at least 11 on Saturday.

Snipers wear yellow on their shoulders. Undercover agents on the street wear orange bracelets.

Protesters are wary of security forces and discrete pro-government gunmen known as “shabiha.”

Drones in Libya; Joint Chiefs of Staff General Cartright Denies “Mission Creep”


General James Cartright, Vice -Chair, Joint Chiefs of Staff, disagrees that there is “Mission Creep” in Libya.

President Barack Obama has approved the use of armed Predator drone aircraft in Libya to improve the precision of low-level attacks on ground targets, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday.

Drones supported because of lower collateral damage, which is especially helpful in urban areas. Drones have better visibility, which is helpful for enemy personnel that are ‘dug-in’.

Drones can also persistently attack the enemy for a full day.

Yemen Security Force Gunfire Kills At Least Four Protesters


Security forces opened fire on protesters in Yemen Tuesday, killing at least three. And on Wednesday gunmen on motorcycles strafed demonstrators in a port city, Al Hudaydah, killing another, according to an opposition activist.

Video shot by someone walking with protesters shows a chaotic scene in Sanaa. Protesters threw stones at government forces, who were using live ammunition, water canons and tear gas.

Syrian Forces Shoot Live Ammunition, Tear Gas at Protesters


Syrian security forces opened fire before dawn on Tuesday at hundreds of anti-government protesters staging a sit-in, shooting live ammunition and tear gas.

One person was killed and three injured when Syrian security forces shot live ammunition into a crowd of anti- government protesters early Tuesday in the country’s third largest city Homs. Homs is a major industrial center in west-central Syria with a population of 1,500,000.

Raw Video Budapest, Hungary: Unions Protest Austerity in Europe


Tens of thousands of people protested in Budapest on Saturday against austerity measures, as European finance ministers met nearby to defend proposals to defeat the region’s crippling debt crisis.

European and local trade unions held a demonstration in Budapest Saturday, April 9, 2011 to protest against austerity measures, which European finance ministers said were unavoidable.

Organizers estimated a turnout about 40,000 people, who marched along the main avenue of the Hungarian capital, as EU finance ministers were completing a two-day meeting. Hungary currently holds the presidency of the European Union.

Day of Wrath Protest in Russia


Russian authorities have detained a number of protesters following a “Day of Wrath” rally in Moscow. Protesters called for political reforms, and it was the second time the protest was allowed, according to Russian media reports.

Russian opposition activists gathered in downtown Moscow Sunday to hold a sanctioned Day of Wrath rally.

‘Day of Wrath’ protesters are demanding direct elections of governors in Russian regions, the transfer of real power to the bodies of local self-government, expansion of the rights of trade unions, the introduction of a progressive income tax scale and a luxury tax, an effective migration policy, a review of the Moscow master plan, protection of the Khimki forest and other issues.

Tens of Thousands of Protesters Gather in Tahrir Square in Cairo

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered on April 8 in downtown Cairo demanding prompt trials for ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his top officials. Several hundred remained in Tahrir Square overnight, defying a curfew. The protesters were dispersed by security forces and troops after clashing.

Cairo’s central Tahrir Square was closed to traffic as dozens of protesters barricaded several entrances a day after it was forcibly evacuated by security forces and soldiers.

Over 50 Rockets Launched from Gaza Hit Ashkelon, Western Negev

Police in the south Israel said on Saturday night that 50 rockets have been fired since Saturday morning.

The central Negev region was hit with 28 rockets. Police bomb squad officers found 13 rockets. Homes were damaged in the attacks. The Lachish region was hit with 22 rockets. Police found 4 of them. No damages or injuries were reported in those attacks.

Two rockets landed in the Eshkol Regional Council on Saturday night. One rocket fell in a community and caused damage to homes. No injuries have been reported.

A rocket also struck a kibbutz in the Shaa’r Hanegev Regional Council.
