VIDEO: Protest in Syria, Security Forces Disperse Crowd in Homs, Syria with Tear Gas

Fifty to 100 protesters have been killed by Syrian security services in the largest protests to take place in the country for decades. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the use of deadly force against protesters as “unacceptable”.

Syria has been governed under an Emergency Law since 1962, resulting in the effective suspension of most constitutional protections for citizens. Hafez al-Assad was in power for 30 years and his son Bashar al-Assad has been in power for the past 10 years.

Homs is a city in western Syria and the capital of the Homs Governorate. It is 501 metres (1,644 ft) above sea level and is located 101 miles north of Damascus. Located on the Orontes River, Homs is also the central link between the interior cities and the Mediterranean coast.

Homs is a major industrial center in Syria, and with a population of 1,500,000, and is the third largest city in the country. Homs population reflects Syria’s general religious diversity, composed mostly of Arabic-speaking Sunni Muslims, with a Christian minority.

Protesters Fight On and Gaddafi Vows to ‘Fight On’

Protesters tore up and burned the Green Book that Muammar Gaddafi used to threaten protester with death, but Gaddafi vowed to ‘fight on’.

Libya witnessed another day of chaos on Wednesday, as a defiant Muammar Gaddafi refused to step down in the face of widespread protests, calling instead for his supporters to “cleanse” the country “house by house”.

Calling those who stand against him “rats” and “mercenaries”, he said during a televised address on Tuesday that he would fight to the last, and that he would rather die “a martyr” than quit office.

On Wednesday, Franco Frattini, the Italian foreign minister, said that reports of 1,000 people being killed in a violent anti-government crackdown on protests that has raged since February 17th were “credible”.

North Korea Fires Artillery Shells in Training Drill After Attacking Yeonpyeong

North Korea was estimated to have fired about 20 shells as part of a training exercise on Friday. Blasts were heard several times in Yeonpyeong from the inland area of Gaemori, North Korea, between 12:20 p.m. and a little past 3 p.m. No rounds fell on South Korean territory or in the territorial waters of South Korea.

The firing came as South Korea and U.S. officials were touring damaged buildings in Yeonpyeong, and as the United States moved armaments and personnel to the Yellow Sea for a joint naval drill set to start tomorrow.

Gecko — unmanned robot is just one of the military prototypes presented at the European Land Robot Trial in Germany. The primary function of many of the units is reconnaissance — keeping troops out of harms way.

Developers are still waiting for a breakthrough technology to increase reliability and autonomy.

Egyptian Military Sources Outline Israel’s Preparations to Strike Iran

Egyptian military sources report that the Israeli Navy and the US Fifth Fleet have been charting Persian Gulf waters and Iranian shorelines in preparation for attacks by Israeli naval and special operations forces.

The Egyptian report also claims IDF intelligence and special forces officers have been marking out routes for their air and ground forces to push into Iran and strike its nuclear installations.

Information was leaked to Shorouk, a publication which Egyptian intelligence often uses as an outlet for information believed to be credible.

Two U.S. Soldiers Killed by IED, Undisclosed Location in Southern Afghanistan

Two U.S. soldiers were killed Saturday in southern Afghanistan (exact location not disclosed). The deaths were reported by NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. The two deaths Saturday bring the death toll in Afghanistan to 22 so far this year.

Four Afghan soldiers were killed in a separate incident in the Wardak province in eastern Afghanistan.

U.S. Drones Fire into Village of Sanzalai, Pakistan Up to 20-25 Killed

Deadliest UAV missile strike since the suicide bombing at FOB Chapman in Afghanistan that killed eight people — including seven CIA agents: 20 to 25 killed in the Village of Sanzalai, Pakistan where a base is located for the Taliban network run by Sirajuddin Haqqani. The area borders Paktika Province in Afghanistan.
