A U.S.-born Islamic cleric linked to attacks by al-Qaida in Yemen on U.S. targets called for Muslims around the world to kill Americans in a new video posted on extremist websites Monday.

Anwar al-Awlaki (April 22, 1971 (age 39) in Las Cruces, New Mexico) is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen, and of Yemeni descent. He is an Islamic lecturer, spiritual leader, and former imam who is reported have inspired Islamic terrorists against the West.

U.S. government officials believe he has become “operational” as a senior talent recruiter, motivator, and participant in planning and training “for al-Qaeda and all of its franchises”.

U.S. President Barack Obama approved the targeted killing of al-Awlaki by April 2010, making al-Awlaki the first U.S. citizen ever placed on the CIA target list.

In May 2010, Faisal Shahzad, who pleaded guilty to the 2010 Times Square car bombing attempt, told interrogators he was “inspired by” al-Awlaki, and sources said Shahzad had made contact with al-Awlaki over the Internet.

After the Fort Hood shooting, al-Awlaki praised Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan’s actions. U.S. intelligence intercepted at least 18 emails between Hasan and al-Awlaki from December 2008 to June 2009, including one in which Hasan wrote: “I can’t wait to join you [in the afterlife].”

VIDEO from Dubai showing Mahan Air, Qatar Airways aircraft. U.S. intelligence officials intercepted three suspicious packages in September that they think were a dry run for Friday’s mail bomb scheme, a U.S. official said Monday. Authorities think the October 29, 2010 attempt was to bring down the aircraft over an U.S. city.

Suspected al-Qaida plotters behind a mail bomb scare last week performed a “dry run” in September, sending similar packages with books, papers, CDs and other household items rather than explosives from Yemen to Chicago to time how long they would take to be delivered.

The September packages were intercepted because return addresses were linked to al-Qaida in Yemen — the same group suspected in the cargo bombs found Oct. 29, 2010.

The American-born spokesman for al-Qaida, Adam Gadahn, 31, has been arrested by Pakistani intelligence officers in Karachi, according to Pakistani officials. The word of his arrest, reported to have occurred in the past few days, occurred just after a video was released showing him urging U.S. Muslims to attack their own country. U.S. defense and intelligence officials have not verified the report from Pakistan.

Al-Qaida’s American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood.

A U.S. court charged Adam Gadahn with treason in 2006. He grew up in Riverside County, California, and converted to Islam at a mosque in nearby Orange County. He moved to Pakistan in 1998, according to the FBI, and is said to have attended an al-Qaida training camp six years later, serving as a translator and consultant. He has been wanted by the FBI since 2004.

Gadahn has aliases including Yahya Majadin Adams and Azzam al-Amriki.
