Cartoonist Kurt Westergaard’s Attacker, Armed with Axe, Suspected Al Qaeda

A terror-related attempted assassination of cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, 74, by a Somali man with an axe and a knife on Friday, was stopped by police as Westergaard hit a panic button and retreated to a safe room at his residence.

Westergaard depicted the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb in his turban in 2005, which led to death threats over his caricatures of the Prophet.

The Security and Intelligence Service PET reports that the offender has close relations to the Somali terror organization al-Shabaab and al Qaeda leaders in East Africa, and is also suspected of having been involved in terror-related activities during his stay in East Africa.
