Earthquake Aftermath Violence: Gangs Armed with Machetes Loot Streets in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti

Looting has emerged in the aftermath of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake center just southwest of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Apparently the looting is limited to Port-au-Prince’s old commercial center — an area that would be filled with many shops, markets and a few homes. Wednesday the area had reported sightings of gangs of young men with machetes. The armed young men were seen entering stores and taking all the supplies they could carry. Gangs were seen in fierce competition walking up and down streets with machetes held up in the air. Fights involving machetes were reported. No sign of police or military in the area.
