Two female suicide bombers detonated blasts during morning rush hour in central Moscow. The first explosion was at the Lubyanka metro station near the headquarters of the Russian State Security Service FSB (Federal Security Service), formerly known as the Soviet KGB. The second blast came 40 minutes later at the Park Kultury station near Gorky Amusement Park.

Developing information indicates the first device nail bomb device contained the equivalent of four kilograms of TNT, the second up to two kilograms.
FSB preliminary investigation reports involvement of terrorist groups from the Northern Caucasus. Chechnia, Chechenia or Noxçiyn, is a federal subject of Russia. It is located in Southeastern part of Europe, in the Northern Caucasus mountains, in the Southern Federal District. As at 1 January 2010, the population was 1,267,740 (according to Russian State statistics). Most Chechens are Sunni Muslim, the country having converted to Islam between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Most of the population follows either the Shafi’i, Hanafi, or Maliki schools of jurisprudence, fiqh. The Shafi’i school of jurisprudence has a long tradition among the Chechens, and thus it remains the most practiced.
Terek Cossacks (predominately Russian Orthodox) and the Armenian community have become a minority or practically non-existent in the region.
