Day of Wrath Protest in Russia



Russian authorities have detained a number of protesters following a “Day of Wrath” rally in Moscow. Protesters called for political reforms, and it was the second time the protest was allowed, according to Russian media reports.

Russian opposition activists gathered in downtown Moscow Sunday to hold a sanctioned Day of Wrath rally.

‘Day of Wrath’ protesters are demanding direct elections of governors in Russian regions, the transfer of real power to the bodies of local self-government, expansion of the rights of trade unions, the introduction of a progressive income tax scale and a luxury tax, an effective migration policy, a review of the Moscow master plan, protection of the Khimki forest and other issues.

Yemen: Fighting in Sanaa Between Tribesmen Loyal to President Saleh and Mutinous Soldiers Supporting Anti-Government Protesters



GRAPHIC VIDEO: Tribesmen loyal to Yemen’s embattled president on Tuesday clashed with a group of soldiers whose commander has sided with the opposition, and the fighting in a suburb of the capital Sanaa left three tribesmen dead.

New fighting reported in Sanaa, Yemen where three people were reported killed in the capital city. The fight Tuesday occurred between tribesmen loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and soldier backing anti-goevernment protesters.

At Least 42 Protesters Killed at Anti-Government Rally by Plainclothes Snipers in Sanaa, Yemen


According to witness and medical personnel, Yemeni security forces and plainclothes snipers rooftops shot and killed up to 42 protesters at an anti-government rally in Sanaa after Muslim prayers on Friday

President Ali Abdullah Saleh declared a state of emergency. Also, at least 300 were injured.

Saleh denied the shooters were police, and declared a 30-day state of emergency that gives wider powers to security forces and bars citizens from bearing arms in public.

Yemen is the second country in the region to announce emergency rule this week. Bahrain’s introduced martial law on Tuesday, which was followed by a major crackdown on protesters.

Over 70 people have been killed in several weeks of civil disturbances.

About 40 percent of the population in Yemen live on $2 a day or less, and a third face chronic hunger.

Saudi Troops Send 3,500 Troops to Bahrain


Demonstrators who have seized control of key points in Manama the capital of Bahrain.

The response of a National Guard brigade, a mechanized brigade of the Saudi army and a tank battalion with 3,500 troops. The force consists of a six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council to guard Bahrain’s oil facilities.

The Shiite opposition demonstrators in Bahrain denounced the entry of foreign troops into Bahrain as an “occupation” and “conspiracy” against unarmed civilians. Demonstrators have appealed to the United Nations to take action.

Manama is a financial hub for the Persian Gulf region and a center of Islamic banking. There is also a large retail sector in the shopping malls around Seef, while the center of Manama is dominated by small workshops and traders.

Protesters began February 14, 2011 as a day of protest to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the National Action Charter.

Yemen Police Shoot Protesters at Tahrir Square: 6 Injured, 1200 Injured


Police in Yemen used tear gas, water cannons and live bullets at anti-government protesters at a protest camp in Tahrir Square in the center of the capital, Sanaa. At least six people died and about 1200 were injured.
Reports say hundreds of police moved in, where protesters have been camping out in Sanaa’s Tahrir Square for weeks.

The clashes came after the US urged opposition groups to take up President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s call for talks.

Weeks of protest against Saleh’s 32-year rule have left about 30 people dead.

Police were blocking medical teams from entering the area.

At Security Forces Shooting Protesting Women Abidjan, Ivory Coast: At Least 7 Dead



Security forces loyal to President Laurent Gbagbo, who is clinging to power in Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), fatally shot six women in the Abodo district of Abidjan, protesting his refusal to leave office Thursday, as the U.N. said more than 200,000 people have fled the intensified fighting.

Troops loyal to Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo have killed at least seven women during a protest calling for him to step down. The troops pulled up in armored vehicles and began shooting.

Supporters of Alassane Ouattara burned tires and furniture in the street to protest the attack.

Laurent Koudou Gbagbo has served as the President of Côte d’Ivoire since 2000. A history teacher by profession, Gbagbo was one of the primary opponents of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. He founded the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) in 1982 and unsuccessfully ran for President against Houphouët-Boigny at the start of multi-party politics in 1990. When Robert Guéï, heading a military junta, barred other leading politicians from running against him in the October 2000 presidential election, Gbagbo was left as the only significant opposition candidate. Gbagbo claimed victory after the election and his supporters took to the streets, toppling Guéï; Gbagbo was installed as President.

Thousands Keep Up Protest in Sanaa, Yemen



Thousands of protesters gathered in Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Sunday to call for president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. Saleh suffered another blow when two powerful chiefs from his own tribe joined the opposition.

Ali Abdullah Saleh is the first and current President of the Republic of Yemen. Saleh previously served as President of the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) from 1978 until 1990. During the term he assumed the office of chairman of the Presidential Council of the Republic of Yemen (North & South Yemen). He is the longest-serving president of Yemen, ruling since 1978. On February 2, 2011, Saleh announced that he would step down in 2013.

Protesters Fight On and Gaddafi Vows to ‘Fight On’



Protesters tore up and burned the Green Book that Muammar Gaddafi used to threaten protester with death, but Gaddafi vowed to ‘fight on’.

Libya witnessed another day of chaos on Wednesday, as a defiant Muammar Gaddafi refused to step down in the face of widespread protests, calling instead for his supporters to “cleanse” the country “house by house”.

Calling those who stand against him “rats” and “mercenaries”, he said during a televised address on Tuesday that he would fight to the last, and that he would rather die “a martyr” than quit office.

On Wednesday, Franco Frattini, the Italian foreign minister, said that reports of 1,000 people being killed in a violent anti-government crackdown on protests that has raged since February 17th were “credible”.

Police Disperse Iranian Protesters With Tear Gas, Sec of Sate Clinton Comments on Courage of Iranian People



Clashes between Iranian police and tens of thousands of protesters wracked central Tehran on Monday killing one person, as opposition supporters tried to evoke the spirit of Egypt’s recent popular uprising.

Hillary Clinton: “What we see happening in Iran today is a testament to the courage of the Iranian people, and an indictment of the hypocrisy of the Iranian regime.”

Hundreds of anti-government protesters returned to the streets of central Cairo on Saturday, chanting slogans against Hosni Mubarak, just hours after the Egyptian president fired his Cabinet and promised reforms but refused to step down.

Thirty-eight protesters killed. 2,000 injured. Three Egyptian police killed.

Tens of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators in central Cairo protesting the leadership of President Hosni Mubarak. Cairo in anarchy.

Police and military are not necessarily cooperative. Police shoot into crowd. Police opened fire on 1,000 Egyptian protesters trying to storm the Interior Ministry in Cairo Saturday, Plainclothes police officers beating demonstrators with batons.
